4 killed in Baldia mosque shoot-out

Around 20 to 22 unidentified criminals, armed with lethal weapons, broke into the Moachko area on Monday afternoon, threatened the residents to leave the area and later went to a mosque in the locality and killed two Pesh Imams and two worshipers inside.

Qari Alam Zaib, the Pesh Imam, Qari Shams, the Naib-Peshimam, and two worshippers, Mohammed Kamal and Abdul Malik were shot dead by the criminals. After the prayers, some unidentified people, who witnesses claimed belonged to a political group, came and opened indiscriminate fire within the mosque and killed the four men, and fled.

Corroborating the police version, the residents and worshippers in the area said that they had heard, from various circles, that two groups were fighting for possession of a piece of land in Pakistan Bazaar and Mominabad areas, which had resulted in a heavy gun-battle.

Later in the afternoon, they had been informed that the matter was resolved as a heavy contingency of police and Rangers controlled the area. However, after Asr prayers concluded and worshippers were returning from the mosque, around 22 persons, posing as members of a political group, came and threatened them to leave the area or face dire consequences.

Govt deplores JI chief’s statement against Army

ISLAMABAD: A government spokesman has deeply regretted the
statement of Ameer Jamaat-e-lslami Qazi Husain Ahmed that appeared in a section of the press in which he has alleged that the Army is on its way to disintegrate the country to accomplish “the US agenda” in the region.

The government spokesman said the institutions responsible for national security should be kept beyond such political statements, which are only issued for vested interests and to gain political mileage.

The spokesman said Qazi Husain’s statement itself accomplishes an anti-state agenda that seeks to create a wedge between the civilians and the military and also aims to lower the morale of the security forces.

The spokesman said instead of levelling allegations, Qazi Husain should play his role in helping the government in its efforts for resolving the issue through peaceful means. It is unfortunately out of political expediency that the JI Ameer has left the country at the mercy of terrorism and extremism, the spokesman said. The security forces are carrying out operations on the directives of the government to restore its writ in the FATA and Swat, the spokesman concluded.

10 militants die in Swat bombing

MINGORA/PESHAWAR: Security forces on Monday claimed to have killed 10 militants and arrested three in an operation in Sirsenai area of Kabal in Swat valley, and conceded the death of one soldier in Totano Bandai.

After suffering casualties in Sirsenai a few days ago, security forces decided to launch an operation to purge the area of the militants. They condoned off the village early on Monday morning and asked the militants to surrender, but they opted to fight.

A press release of the ISPR-run Swat Media Centre said that after refusal of the combatants to lay down arms, security forces asked civilians to leave the area within six hours to reduce the prospects of collateral damage in the military action against the insurgents.

As the six-hour deadline to civilian expired, gunship helicopters heavily pounded the positions of the militants. Security forces also used artillery fire to target the pro-Taliban fighters. According to the ISPR, an exchange of fire with the militants also took place in Sirsenai. “Ten miscreants were killed and scores injured, while three were arrested,” it said.

A camp has been set up for the displaced people at Balograme, situated on the outskirts of Mingora, as people in large numbers migrated from Sirsenai in view of the operation. The security forces appreciated Sirsenai residents for their cooperation by vacating their houses before the operation, but said the action was initiated as a last resort after militant attacks on the forces convoy.

Security forces claimed the gunship helicopters also hit militant hideouts in Aghal Parao area of Matta, the hotbed of Taliban-linked militants, killing several militants and destroying the munitions concealed in the house of militant commander Ayub with a code name of “Abdali”. In Totano Bandai area of Kabal, the militants attacked a security forces checkpost, killing a paramilitary soldier, Tahir Shah, and injuring another. The insurgents retreated as a result of the retaliatory action by the security forces personnel manning the checkpost.

Two persons were injured when their houses were hit by mortar shells in Kabal. Bodies of Pervez, Shah Jehan and Jamal - three Jirga elders abducted a couple of days back- were found in Chungalai area of Matta. The militants had picked up around 70 members of the Jirga held in Barthana area to mull the eviction of militants from their village. Corpse of Raza Khan, a guard of cellular company, was found on the outskirts of Mingora, the district headquarters of the valley. He was picked up by the militants a couple of day ago.

It is a matter of concern that the militants have increased their activities in Mingora and its surroundings and have warned the women travelling in vehicles without their male relatives of strict action.

KHAR: Military authorities on Monday claimed to have killed six more militants in a shoot-out in the restive Bajaur tribal region where the tribal elders said the operation against the militants should continue till the achievement of the objectives. Besides gunship helicopters, military officials said artillery shells were fired from Khar, headquarters of Bajaur, towards militants’ strongholds in Mamond and Charmang areas.

Meanwhile, addressing a joint press conference on Monday, the elders included former MNA Shahabuddin Khan, Maj (r) Fazal Kareem, Anwar Zeb Khan, Malik Muhammad Younas, Malik Hifzur Rehman and Malik Muhammad Akbar said talks with the militants would bear no fruit as they were neither ready to recognise the Constitution nor the law of the country, saying that who would give guarantee that the militants would halt their activities. The elders said the militants of other areas had entered the agency and were allegedly disturbing the peace. They said about 650 tribesmen, including local elders, had been killed during the operation, besides torching of the public installations.

The elders alleged that the militants were blocking the development projects in the area. They condemned the killing of innocent personnel of the security forces and religious scholars by the militants.

“We can take our decisions and launch an operation against the militants in accordance with our local traditions and customs,” they added. They urged the local tribesmen and religious scholars to stand up to the militants and support the government.
